Player Profile from Match Day Programme. (season 2002/03)
Shaun Woof was one of the influx of summer signings at The Bees. Having enjoyed a couple of seasons with Leeds, Shaun, like so many before him, saw the potential that Birmingham holds for having a Premiership rugby side.
The Bees are something of a sleeping giant, but as a new lad in the team I feel that weve all gelled really well. Weve been through dome tough times this season and the players have really had to look closely at themselves. This has meant being very self-critical but also critical of each other, but the effect has been very positive. Weve now got back on track with wins over Coventry and Wakefield, so were looking for a good run-in to the end of the season.
And in the process of joining up with The Bees, the opportunity also came about to join up once again with Phil Maynard, known from his Worcester days, and the results from those days are there for all to see.
The club has got a real atmosphere about it, but it also retains the grass-roots feel of a rugby club. If we get the basics right both on and off the pitch, we have a future at the top level.
I think all of the squad can see how the training and structure of training has improved throughout the season. The sessions are well structured and were trying to generate a no excuses environment.
Having had a taste of the high-life, through gaining promotion with Leeds and spending a season in the Premiership, it was a tough decision o move. But, as so many clubs have found it is a tough life in the Premiership if youre newly promoted.
It was good to reach the Premiership and play at that level, but this was tempered but having a lot of tough matches and finishing bottom at the end of the season, although in the process we did sneak a few wins over some of the top sides in the country.
Like all players, Shaun has other outside interests. This includes having a part time share in a café in his business life, but like so many others, enjoying football and gold. And there was a mention of a particular film, Happy Gilmour.
the future aspirations and potential of the club are great, I want to play in the Premiership again and I think all of the squad harbour such ambitions, and hopefully we can do that with The Bees.
