As we near the season's halfway point, it is interesting to reflect upon progress this year.  The step-up from last season (Under 8) to Under 9 rules is a large one, not only for the children, but also the coaches (most of whom move up with 'their' group of childrenm usually including their own sons & daughters).  For a start, we now play what might conveivable be called "real" rugby.  No more tagbelts or difficult did he/didn't he touch decidions.  Under 9 rugby introduces two of the key elements of the senior game: physical contact and et - piece play.  for us, this means splitting the team into genuine forward and back divisions, proper tackling, rucks, mauls, set-pieve play, together with scrums & line-outs (albeit still uncontested with three forwards).
The most daunting of these new challenges must surely be tackling.  The expressions on the childrens faces range from sheer terror to absolute relish.  The feelings expressed on their mums & dad's faces range similarly from eyes shut/fingers crossed, to that slightly smug glow when little Jonny's just made a try-saving tackle on the opposition's biggest tank-like forward!  On the whole, however, the team have adapted very well to their new circumstances.  In particular, the more physical children can now enjoy deploying their strength, rather than just chasing the coat-tails of the smaller, faster ones around the ta-rugby pitch.  To simply assume that the bigger children therefore enjoy their rugby more than the smaller ones, however, would be untrue.  It is as much abou mental strength as physical, and whilst we spend considerable time coaching phyical technique, we also have to work on each child's self confidence.  And rugby is a great sport for building this.  We have a strong squad with some very capable youngsters, & for the first time, the team has a female member - welcome Laura.  We will be delighted to welcome other girls who would like the chance to run a few rings around the boys, so if you have a daughter - or even a son of course - who may be interested, please get in touch.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nigel Sanders & John Domachi for their assistance.  Coaching has to be a team effort - theirs simply too much for one person to manage, and I am indebted to their continued support and advice (and also offering to do the warm up when I'm not feeling so great!).
And a final big thank you to all of the parents for their continued support.  Come wind, rain or shine (and usually he former at Portway!) they are always there egging the team on, coffee & baccon butty in hand.  Not only that but many of the Under 9 parents have also been heavily involved in supporting the club, from the redecoration of the clubhouse, to running the kitchen in Mr Peel's very occasional absence.  Theres even talk of he possibility of an Under 9's Easter tour to Ireland - we just need to come up with the right excuse (bets on i begins with a "G"!)

Breedon Match Report

Marvellous, splendiferous performance! If only! A bad day at the office, firstly Bees U17 make more mistakes in one game than we have all season only to be followed by a s... Welsh performance endured without any beer due to the lack of bar at Breedon, diabolical disastrous day! To say I am dischuffed would be the understatement of the century to date, thank goodness it's only a game! Anyway there's always the battle of the stings to look forward to next weekend. Thanks for the great turnout from U17 who alone are accounting for 1.25 coaches! For those of you not in the know Rugby Special with the nice John Inthedale will be at ShX on our return.

Anyway better say something about the game:

Played with the wind in the first half and didn't score enough points or dominate territory in the way we should have, mainly due to getting pinged for offside and coming in from the side, something the ref warned about before. Scored two excellent tries from Steve after sweet backs move and great lineout drive with powerful finish by Berty.

Breedon to their great played with great spirit tackled everything that moved and rucked better than us, they kicked well with the stiff wind in the second half and scored with a forward drive, a penalty to level the game at 10 each and then scored from lineout drive with last move of the game!

Mars Bar moment
Dale doing a number after the first scrum on his much larger opponent
Has to be Bones ignoring 4 man overlap, its taken us all season to create one and then we ignore it

After a bump on the head and replacement Sam asking this evening how we had played.............

We are looking to build on last seasons successes from the team tours, the U16s North Midlands Plate victory, the U11s as finalists in the North Midlands Cup and the U7s as winners of our own club festival.

This season we will run a full quota of teams from the U8s to U17s, we have a strong fixture list for all age groups with the U17s competing in a new North Midlands RFU league. All other teams from U10 upwards get the chance to compete in the North Midlands Cup. In addition the more promising players from the junior section get the chance to attend Greater Birmingham squad sessions which in turn can lead to higher representative honours.

The U17s have made a great start in the league (played 4, won 3, points for 96, points against 41), All squad members have played this season so credit must go to the coaches Phil Millichap, Beau Campbell and Dave Millions for the results achieved. Also of note is the U21s who achieved runner up spot in their age group at the Silhilians festival earlier this month.

A number of improvements have been made at our home ground Portway, special thats go to Julie Linnet and her team for decorating the club house during the summer. The Dirt Trackers have spent a lot of time sorting out the services, fixing posts etc and we hope to be able to create a 4th pitch later this season to complement the new pitch layout for the minis and midis.

Congratulations go to all our coaches who have taken their coaching badge this season, we had a 100% pass rate.

Mini and Midi level 1; Carrick Lindsey, Nick Perrin, Terry Powell, John Domachi, Nigel Saunders, Mark Crees, Alastair Robertson, Bill Bucknell, Kevin Johnson. Youth Level 1; Jeremy Goode and Ian Hughes.

New members are always welcome, were hoping to capitalise on the interest generated from the Rugby World Cup with posters being placed in many schools throughout the region.  If you know of any budding young players aged from 6 upwards then you are most welcome to come and join us at Portway on Sunday Mornings from 10.30am. Details can be found on the club website http://www.beesrugby.com

Match Day programme for Bees Vs Manchester (29.11.03)

After the great success of the Rugby World Cup and the England squad returning home as WORLD CHAMPIONS we are anticipating an increase in enquiries from youngsters interested to take up the game.  Just prior to the RWC, we circulated posters to many Junior and Senior schools in the Solihull, S Birmingham and Redditch areas to promote our club.  If you are one of those parents (or grandparents) interested in bringing their son or daughter along on a Sunday morning you are most welcome.  There have been a number of new players join during the last month at different age groups, its never too late to learn the game,

Our aim is to provide rugby for the community by offering boys and girls aged 6 to 17 years the opportunity to learn and play the game in a safe environment.  A great deal of emphasis is placed on safety, enjoyment and participation for ALL to help generate a strong team spirit and enjoyable club atmosphere.

Players are gradually introduced to the skills and rules of rugby football during the Mini and Midi years.  Tag rugby is played at U7 and U8s. Tackling is introduced at U9s, contested scrums and line-outs at U10.  It is not until the players reach their teenage years as juniors that the complete game is played on a full size pitch.  All the different stages are explained in the Rugby Continuum which can be downloaded from www.rfu.com, a code of practise for players, coaches and spectators is also outlined on the website.

Mini and Junior teams train and play at the Portway ground.  Whilst our facilities by modern day standards are best described as humble, there are ambitious plans to develop the site over the next couple of years to provide facilities in keeping with a senior club competing in National Division 1.  Training session run from 10.30am 12.00 noon on Sunday mornings, match details are published in the club fixture list.  Further details on the web site www.beesrugby.com, if you have any questions please contact one of the coaches.

In future programmes a Coach from each age group will write about their team and players, from the success of out U7 & 8s to the U17s who are competing in a new North midlands RFU league.

We look forward to seeing you

Richard Crane
